Get support to stop smoking
Smokefree School Gates
About Smokefree School Gates
Young people who smoke by age 15 are 3 times more likely to become lifelong smokers. Reducing visible smoking and vaping around school gates helps:
- denormalise these behaviours
- limits children's exposure to second‑hand smoke
- discourages uptake
Pilot launched
The pilot has launched at Elmhurst School Primary school.
Signs designed by pupils have been installed. They introduce smoke-free and vape‑free zones at school entrances (and exits) to protect children and support positive social norms.
What's happening next
There are plans to trial this approach with a secondary school during the 2026/27 academic year. After this, Smokefree School Gates will be available as an optional approach for schools to adopt.
